ANIMAL welfare will be in the frame this weekend when the RSPCA hosts an art show at West Wollongong to raise funds for the organisation.

The work of almost 50 artists and craftspeople will be on sale, including painters, potters, sculptors, quilters, jewellers and photographers.

The fund-raiser is timely too, with revelations that the number of pets being abandoned or surrendered to the society has surged by almost 30 per cent.

RSPCA NSW's regional branch vice-president Mike Malone said yesterday the Unanderra centre had reached capacity but he hoped numbers would drop over the weekend.

Mr Malone encouraged people considering buying animals for Christmas to visit the centre, while those unable to keep pets could invest in some fine art.

Celebrated Stanwell Park painter John Vander will be the feature artist during the three-day sale, with 20 works on exhibition.

He will be joined by emerging Picton artist Alex Hume.

All artists will donate between 20 and 25 per cent of the sale price to the RSPCA.

The show will be held at Brother Pelin Hall, Edmund Rice College. It will open on Friday from 6.30pm with a cocktail party.
